Phil meets Ned

Phil Connors meets Ned Ryerson on the street in downtown Punxsutawney, near the Gobbler’s Knob ceremony. Ned is an overly enthusiastic and rather annoying insurance salesman who introduces himself as an old schoolmate of Phil’s. He enthusiastically shouts, “Phil? Phil Connors? Is that you?” and reminds Phil of all sorts of embarrassing memories from the past. To escape Ned, Phil runs away and steps into a hole in the road that is filled with ice-cold water. This street encounter repeats itself several times throughout the time loop. At first, Phil tries to avoid or brush him off, but as he changes, he reacts differently — from complete irritation to humorously jumping on Ned’s energy. A plaque has been placed at the spot where Phil steps into the hole in the road because the town of Woodstock is very proud of the scene that brings many tourists to the town. The place is in front of the cafe "Tip Top" where Phil often talks to Rita.
